On Thursday December 22nd, 2016 Prof. Ahmed Abdillahi Boqore, Vice President for Academic Affairs hosted 1324 students (857 Male students representing 65% and 467 female Students representing 35% of the total Freshman students population) from Freshman Department together with over 100 other students enrolled for various Diploma programmes to an orientation Day at the Main campus Amoud University, Borama. The event which was held inside the main graduation  hall at the main campus commenced at around 8.30am with various standup comedians entertaining the gathering and was also attended by Prof. Mohamed Mohamoud Jama "Derie" Vice President Public Relations and Community Outreach, Amoud University; Ahmed Muse Murud "Aways", the Dean Department of Freshman Studies, Amoud University together with Harun Ismail Warsame, Associate Dean, Department of Freshman Studies, Amoud University. Accompanying them were Hamud Ibrahim Barkhadle, Director of Finance, Amoud University; Abdillahi Abdirahman Aare, The Chief Academic Registrar, Amoud University;  Said Hassan Habaneh, Dean, Office of Students Affairs and Counseling Services (OSACS), Amoud University; together with Abdinasir Diriye, the Assistant Dean OSACS, AU; and Mohamed Ahmed Amare, librarian, Amoud University main campus library amongst other guests.

Prof. Boqore talked about Amoud University as an institution, briefing the students about its history and background and highlighted the strengths of the university including with regard to its membership in such respected university associations as Association of Arab Universities (AArU http://www.aaru.edu.jo/En/English/Home.aspx) and Somali Research and Education Network (SomaliREN http://somaliren.org/current-members/). In addition the Vice President emphasized on the need for the students to develop a reading culture and make use of the numerous library facilities located in each and every campus by borrowing books and also sitting within the library premises in order to acquire as much knowledge as they possibly can.

Amoud University has several libraries well-stocked with latest relevant  books in various fields inlcuding one at main Campus, one at the faculty of Agriculture located about 1 km from the main campus, another at the School of Postgraduate Studies and Research (SPGSR) in Borama, yet another one at the Faculty of Sharia and Law, one at the School of Health sciences and finally one at School of Postgraduate Studies and Research (SPGSR)Campus in Hargeisa City. At Amoud University students have various central offices set up to meet their needs such as Office of the Chief Registrar, Office of Students Affairs and Counseling Services, Office of Gender Advocacy and Finance and Administration Offices. The Vice President higlighted all these before inviting the Vice President for Public Relations and Community Outreach, Amoud University for a speech.

Prof. Mohamed Mohamoud Jama "Derie" Vice President Public Relations and Community Outreach further welcomed the new group of students to Amoud University family telling  them of the need to study at Amoud University, not just for being the pioneer institution of higher studies in Somaliland but also for scoring a first in several areas including in offering respected Masters Degrees in Somaliland and also offering Heath Sciences and producing some of the first doctors in the country. Amoud University has excelled in Research Studies and has diversified its focus to not only teaching and learning but also in basic research and applied research. The Vice President further highlighted the many faculties available for the students out of which they can choose their specialization areas from, upon completion of their freshman Studies. These include the six schools from the College of Health Sciences School of Medicine and Surgery, School of Nursing and Midwifery, School of Dentistry, School of Medical Laboratory Technology, School of Pharmacy and School of Public Health; and the six Faculties from main campus Amoud University namely Faculty of Agriculture and Environment, Faculty of Business and Public Administration, Faculty of Computing and ICT, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Economics and Political Science and Faculty of Engineering in addition to Faculty of Sharia and Law, located down-town Borama Town.

The Dean of Freshman Department announced to the students the official dates for conducting of final examinations for the freshman department, which is scheduled for commencement Sunday, January 15th, 2017 and ending Thursday, January 20th, 2017. According to the Dean, Freshman Department of commonly referred to as the gateway to Amoud University. Since its establishment the department has been recruiting those students who have graduated from Somaliland Secondary Schools, Somalia, the region and beyond. They come from almost 29 different destinations around the world. The aim is to improve the quality of education we give in order to pave the way for further studies and to enlist students into their respective departments in Amoud University according to their Grade Point Average (GPA). Freshman Department is a stepping stone to something higher. Freshman Department differs from the rest of Amoud University departments in several ways but most importantly is the fact that it has the largest population of students at any given time since it receives all of the students from secondary schools at enrty point before they get distributed to various other faculties.

Next to speak was the Dean, OSACS, who informed students about services provided for the students by the university through their office. He assured them of a listening ear to their problems in cases of need. Furthermore he made the students aware of rules and regulations covering use of university transportation, and need for keeping time for boarding buses as those buses have tight schedules which must be strictly kept for efficient provision of the services and movement of students and staff to and from main campus. In addition he urged them to approach his office for other issues that may arise such as conflict resolution, career guidance and counseling, health issues and non acdemic issues that may require consultation even of a external nature such as difficulty in fee payment or personal struggles at home. OSACS also handles disciplinary cases amongst students. The Students Union is part and parcel of the OSACS where several student leaders converge and become part of the wider management team that  handles student affairs. The student elections for various positions including the powerful  Chairmanship positions are monitored and organized by the OSACS during each and every academic year. The last elections were held on December 12th, 2016 where Hamze Abdillahi Yusuf from Faculty of Business and Public Administration emerged as the Chairperson from a team of 21 faculty student representatives for the Academic Year 2016/ 2017. He takes over from the last chairperson Abdirahman Hufane who served for the one term in 2015/2016. OSACS also organizes several extracurricular activities for students including field trips and sports competitions. Moreover the office is in charge of sourcing for placement opportunities for students who need industrial internship or field attachment opportunities in governmental organizations and non governmental organizations.

The Director of Finance who spoke next, welcomed students and told them about the diversity of lecturers which makes the quality of education at the institution to be one of the highest in the region. The faculty members comprise those locals and expartriates trained in various countries including Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan, Somali regions, Djibouti, USA, Pakistan, India and Bangaldesh amongst others.

The Chief Registrar gave the key note address in which he highlighted need for students to know where to go for particular information regarding the university such as programmes offered at the university, grades, examination timetables, opening dates, semester re-opening dates, public holdays, credit hours, contact hours, requirements for graduation, condtions for transfer and other details from the academic calendar. He asked students to visit his office in order to know about the Academic Rules and Regulations, examination policy. He further pointed out the fact that the examinations office is part and parcel of the Registrar's Office. The registrar encouraged the young lads to work hard in order to secure a brighter future and have a competetive edge.

On offer, he said were merit scholarships which is offered to the best perfoming student and other shcolarships awarded to the best female student in each and every faculty. He emphasized the need for each and every student to pay fee and process identification documents such as fee payment receipt and student identification card. He went further to define the various types of examinations including normal examination, re-examination and special examination, and recourse. He advised the students to work hard in order to pass their examinations and avoid short cuts which could lead to cancellation of their examinations such as cheating.

At the tail end of the meeting the Chairperson of the Students Union of Amoud University was a given a few minutes for a word or too. Sa'ad Moahmed Bide also, the Chairperson representing Freshman Deprtament got a few minutes of talk time to encourage his fellow comrades and offer them advise on various life issues including but limited to disadvanatages and risks involved in youth migrating to other countries.

Suleiman Hassan Ali, The Deputy Registrar, in his closing remarks also urged students to process their ID Cards in time for purposes of identification before the set date for final examinations. Mohamed Ahmed Amarre, the librarian, also provideed students with tips and hints on what to do  in case they need to borrow books and rules apartaining to the process of borrowing. The successful orientation meeting was closed a few minutes past 11.00 am on that same morning.
