From 7 to 9 December 2022, HORN (One Health Regional Network for the Horn of Africa) project organized
a workshop aimed to strengthen One Health (OH) research capacity in the Horn of Africa in Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia. The event brought together research office coordinators of 20 universities in the region to share
their experiences of conducting OH research, challenges encountered, and possible future research
collaborations between the universities and liaising with existing OH networks/initiatives in the region.
Participants from Somalia/Somaliland and Djibouti raised research funding and capacity challenges
compared to Ethiopia or Kenya and underlined the importance to collaborate in research and capacitybuilding for health researchers. Thus, to strengthen multidisciplinary research collaboration on One
Health research, there is a need to strengthen grantsmanship and manuscript writing skills for researchers
from universities that benefited from the HORN project activities including the Borama One Health
conference in Somalia/Somaliland and Djibouti. The event will be held in Borama, Somaliland from 27th to
31st March 2023. This interactive workshop will strengthen the researcher’s capacity to generate research
ideas, translate ideas to research questions, understand funders, develop proposals, and produce
manuscripts.
