These final exams are scheduled to be continue for the next few days and finish on Thursday, June 27th, 2019. The Freshman Department is the entry point for all students seeking admission into various undergraduate degree programmes offered at Amoud University. Freshman Department is commonly called “the gate way to Amoud University”. Since its establishment, the department has been recruiting those students who graduated from secondary schools, almost in 24 different places and countries all over the world including Somaliland, Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, USA, and England, just to mention but a few.

The aim of this department is to improve the quality of the education of the students in order to pave the way for further studies. In addition, based on the grade point of the students the department enlists the students to different field of studies (According to their cumulative grade point average GPA) upon successful completion of the second semester. Freshman Department is a stepping stone to something higher. This department differs from the rest of Amoud University departments in many ways for instance number of students, time and management.

According to the latest statistics there are 1255 freshman students registered in this academic year September 2018/July 2019 at Amoud University out of whom 816 students (representing 65% of the total freshman student population)are male and 439 students (representing 35% of total freshman student population) are female. Students enrolling for Diploma courses are exempted from this requirement but if such students who have completed Diploma courses may wish to proceed and join any degree programme they must fulfill these requirements. It also employs 29 lecturers of different fields and specializations, and the number is growing year after year. Courses to be taught are core subjects like English, Math’s, basic science subjects like Biology, Physics and Chemistry. The department has five lecture halls in down town Borama and another four in the main campus of Amoud University. The department is chaired by the Dean of the department who manage the unit together with an associate dean and an Administrative Assistant to the Dean.

The students normally go through one academic year programme in which they take first year requirement courses for two semesters namely, Semester I, which runs from September 15th of a preceding calendar year to January 31st of each the subsequent calendar year and semester II, which runs from March 1st to July 15th of the same calendar year. Currently five courses are taught in Semester I and another five courses taught in Semester II of each of the freshman academic years. Upon successful completion of the freshman academic year, a student then enrolls for any programme in one of the preferred schools or faculties of the universities as long as he or she fulfills the minimum entry requirements for that programme and the corresponding subject clusters. A student may select through an online portal his or her preferred faculty, department and programme and is then admitted into the Sophomore academic year (second academic year at the university) where he or she may go ahead to specialize in the preferred area of choice.
