The Theme for the conference was “ Shaping Somaliland’s digital future ’’. Amoud University was represented by Dr. Mohamed Muse Jibril (PhD), the Vice President, Academic Affairs, Amoud University who represented Prof. Suleiman Ahmed Gulaid, President, Amoud University in delivering a keynote speech for the event.
Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) initiated the first annual Somaliland ICT Conference (SLICTC 2019) in the year 2019. The SLICTC 2019 was an opportunity to bring together Somaliland Government, ICT professionals, academics, policy makers, educational institutions, telecommunication companies, and ICT businesses. It facilitated discussion on how the ICT sector can be improved in order to create an enabling environment that can build appropriate sustainable solutions for long-term national development. The conference in this year 2020 focused on the role of ICT in the development of government sectors including education, health, finance and business sector.
On DAY 1 November 14th 2020 entailed registration, Opening Remarks delivered by Eng. Ali Abdillahi Dahir, Director General, Ministry of ICT. This was followed by Keynote Speeches from Abdirahim by Mohamed, COO Somcable, Khaled Sheikh Muhumed, CEO, GTS, Prof. Suleiman Ahmed Guleid, President, University of Amoud who was represented by Dr. Mohamed Muse Jibril, Vice President, Academic Affairs, Amoud University, Drs. Edna Adan Ismail, President, Edna University, and Dr. Mohamoud Yousuf, President, University of Hargeisa.
Welcoming Remarks were delivered by Dr. Abdiweli Sh. Abdillahi Sufi, Minister of ICT before Official Opening by His Excellency, Muse Bihi Abdi, President of Republic of Somaliland. Presentations included Localization of ICT knowledge by Prof. Abdirahman Guri-barwaaqo, Director of Institute of Languages, Gollis University; Importance of GIS and Postal Addressing by Eng. Ibrahim Yousuf Isse, Managing Director, GEOSOL, followed by Panel discussion themed, empowering and sustaining of ICT local talent of Innovations Moderated by Abdirahman Ali Hirsi (Burale). The panelists included Prof. Mubarik Ibrahim Aar, Abdirashid Ibrahim Abdirahman, Dr. Aidarus Mohamed Ibrahim, and Dr. Abdikani Diriye.
On DAY 2 November 15th 2020, there was registration of participants followed by Presentation themed Ethics and Social media by Sh. Maxamuud Sh. Axmed Dalmar, Media Expert and then Penal Discussion on Covid-19: Consequences & Opportunities for Somaliland ICT Sector, Moderated by Abdikadir Mohamed Abdile with Panels including Eng. Ahmednasir Hassan Haji, Khalid Sh. Mohamoud, Ahmed Muse Muroud, Abdirisak Abdirahman Hassan (Rakoub). This was followed by another Presentation themed Somaliland a nation in transformation: How the emerging technology is shaping our future by Dr. Jama Muse Jama, Director, Hargeisa Cultural Centre, and another presentation themed Digital Identity for sustainable development: Opportunities & Challenges by Eng. Ali Abdilahi Dahir Director General, MICT. Another presentation on Importance of Data Protection by Eng. Hamse Hayer, Director, Global ICT Institute was done and finally a presentation titled Contribution of ICT Sector in Somaliland Economy by Eng. Fu’ad Mohamed Nouh, CTO, SOMCABLE. Penal Discussion summarised events for day 2 under the theme Somaliland e-government Progress: challenges and Opportunities, moderator: Suleikha Isahaq Omar, with panelists including Abdirahman Muse Abdi, Eng. Sahardid Ahmed Ali, Dr. Adam Ismail Hassan, and Prof. Mustafe Ismail Eleba.
Concluding remarks were made by Eng. Ali Abdillahi Dahir, Director General, MICT and closing remarks made by H.E. Dr Abdiweli Sh Abdillahi Suufi, Minister, MICT who then invited H.E. Abdirahman Abdillahi Ismail (Saylici), Vice President, Republic of Somaliland to offer closing ceremony speech. Awards distribution and closing ceremony marked the end of the 2 day conference.
