About the School

Mission

School of public health is dedicated to the education of public health professionals; to the discovery, application and dissemination of new knowledge; and to the promotion of health, protection of health and prevention of disease in Somaliland by enhancing community action for health promotion and assisting governmental, non-governmental international agencies in policy development, planning, implementation and evaluation of public health programs.

Vision

School of public health envisions being a regional center of public health excellence in solving public health problems, training and advocating community with their basic health needs, knowledge advancing, advocacy including operational research both qualitative and quantitative and involvement in conducting international and national community services as well as continuing education on the basis of demand from the Ministry of Health and other agencies.

Objectives

  1. Produce qualified and appropriately trained Public Health Professionals,
  2. Provide the highest level of education to public health practitioners, researchers and leaders.
  3. Strengthen health capacities and services for communities
  4. Address national public health problems and promote Wellbeing of the Somaliland and Somali communities.
  5. Communicate and advocate for health education and health promotion.
  6. Collaborate with other professionals, staff, communities and consumers in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of health system programs.
  7. Provide leadership within the health system of Somaliland and Somalia.

History & Background

It was established in academic year 2012-2013 as part of the Amoud College of Health Sciences and the first of its kind in Somaliland and Somalia. The program is designed for four years of study leading to the degree of bachelor of Public Health.

There is a complex threat of rapidly spreading and emerging infectious diseases( Communicable and non-communicable disease) as well as changing lifestyles, a strong health workforce is essential. Building the human resources for health should not only include healthcare professionals like physicians and nurses but must take into consideration public health practitioners and strengthened primary healthcare systems to increase coverage and address the basic health needs of societies.

Bachelor of Public Health

The educational programme of the school of public health aims to provide the students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to become oriented public health professionals who take the leadership roles within the public health issues and meet the current and future challenges of public health issues as to improve the quality of life and the population’s health of the country. The curriculum provides the broad systemic understanding, critical thinking skills, and leadership training needed to tackle today’s complex public health challenges.

Bachelor of Human Nutrition

Human Nutrition was established at the academic year of 2017-2018 as part of the Amoud University College of Health Sciences. Nutrition department is designed for four years of study getting bachelor of Nutrition Science. The program provides many opportunities for education, research and community nutrition knowledge and approaches to contribute and involvement in the advancement of the knowledge in Nutrition discipline to improve the quality of life and the populations Health in Somali society to improve the quality of life in the Somali speaking regions of the horn
