Message from the Dean
The faculty of ICT, located at Amoud University main campus, five kilometers from Borama town center, was established on September 15th, 2009. The faculty admitted 33 students in the bachelor of information technology programme the same year and graduated 24 of the cohort in August 2012. Currently the faculty offers six undergraduate degree programmes and students population has increased exponentially to a total of 843 as of September 2023, indicating major vote of confidence from the stakeholders, particularly in quality of our graduates, making it the most populous faculty at Amoud University. The faculty has a well-balanced team of highly competent local and non-local staff, trained locally and abroad. The teaching staff is readily available to help students as needs arise. Each programme is allocated sufficient time and with efficient management, the faculty ensures that students complete their courses on time. In addition, we work very closely with local organizations, both governmental and non-governmental in trying to close the gap between academics and the industry through industrial internship programmes for each and every academic programme. We are very proud because our graduates have excelled in several areas including setting up their own firms that have served the growing software industry demands in Somaliland and beyond. Vision
To become a leading institution of higher learning of good international repute providing home-grown, real-time and research-based solutions to the myriad problems encountered in Computing and, Information Communication and Technology areas and to be the regional electronic hub for fostering peace and development, through enhanced communication.
Mission
To respond positively to evolving socio-economic needs by designing and implementing computing and informatics education programmes that produce graduates with knowledge, skills and competencies to discern problems and design software solutions that reflect and contextualize diversity at all levels.
Objectives
The objectives of faculty of ICT are:
- To churn out highly qualified professionals whose knowledge base and grasp of computing and informatics are unmatched locally and beyond.
- To produce techno-savvy graduates capable of matching the challenges of this fast-dynamic digital age, who can create job opportunities for themselves and for others by applying the global multifaceted world of computing and informatics concepts.
- To spearhead academic research and publication in the horn of Africa region by both staff and students at the faculty, and application of the proposed solutions from such research activities to help solve the myriad range of computing and information communication and technology problems facing the horn of Africa and the international community at large.
History & Background
The Faculty of ICT at Amoud University, located at the main campus approximately five kilometers from Borama town center, was established on September 15, 2009. In its inaugural year, the Faculty admitted 33 students into the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) programme, graduating 24 of them in August 2012.
Over time, the Faculty expanded its academic offerings to meet the evolving demands of the ICT sector. It introduced the Bachelor of Business Information Technology (BBI) on September 15, 2012, followed by the Diploma in Information Technology (DIT) on March 1, 2014. Further expansion included the Bachelor of Software Engineering (BSE) on September 15, 2018, and the Bachelor of Cyber Security (BCS) on March 1, 2023. By 2025, the Faculty had graduated approximately 1,200 students across its various programmes. Continuing its growth trajectory, the Faculty launched two additional programmes on September 15, 2026: the Bachelor of Data Science (BDS) and the Bachelor of Information Systems (BIS). The current student enrolment stands at 930, comprising 586 (63%) males and 344 (37%) females. The Faculty is now well established to deliver a comprehensive range of ICT-related programmes.
The campus provides 24/7 free Wi-Fi access across all learning areas, supported by two local internet service providers, with a combined bandwidth of 20 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload. The main university library offers a wide range of academic resources, while additional electronic books and reference materials are accessible through the university’s Google Classroom suite.
The Faculty boasts a well-balanced team of highly qualified local and international academic staff, trained both domestically and abroad. Faculty members are readily available to support students as needed. Each programme is carefully structured with adequate time allocation, and through efficient academic management, the Faculty ensures timely completion of studies. Furthermore, the Faculty actively collaborates with other academic institutions, government bodies, and organizations in areas of mutual interest, including research, project implementation, training, and capacity development.
Faculty Programs
Amoud University’s Bachelor of Information Systems program prepares professionals to effectively navigate the intersection of organizational needs and information technology. It covers key areas such as programming, databases, IT infrastructure, and ethics, aligned with international standards. Graduates will serve as administrators, analysts, programmers, and technicians in various sectors.
Amoud University’s Data Science program focuses on utilizing big data and analytics to empower businesses, bridge the talent gap in Africa, and contribute to sustainable economic development in the region. Graduates will possess the skills to interpret numerical conclusions and communicate insights effectively to non-technical stakeholders.
The IT program at Amoud University produces skilled professionals in database administration, web development, and support to meet growing demands in Somaliland and the Horn of Africa, aligning with international standards.
Amoud University’s Bachelor of Business Information Technology program combines business and IT skills to create technologically-savvy managers. Graduates are prepared for post-graduate studies in business, computing, or related fields.
Amoud University’s Bachelor of Software Engineering program prepares graduates for professional careers and graduate studies by providing a balanced mix of computing theory and practical application.
