Amoud University has officially wrapped up its highly anticipated University
Culture Week, a vibrant and colorful celebration of Somali heritage, arts, and
athletics. The week-long festival, which kicked off on May 3rd, 2026, concluded
with a grand closing ceremony on May 7th, 2026, leaving students and staff with
unforgettable memories.
The event was designed to connect the younger generation with their rich
ancestry, showcasing a wide array of activities that celebrated Somali
traditions (Hidaha iyo Dhaqanka). The university campus was transformed into a
cultural hub, buzzing with energy, history, and talent.
Highlights of the Culture Week included:
- Traditional Dances & Cuisine: Attendees were treated to mesmerizing
traditional dances (Ciyaar dhaqameed) that reflected the diverse cultural
tapestry of the Somali people. Alongside the performances, a variety of
authentic traditional foods (Cunto dhaqameed) were served, allowing
participants to experience the rich flavors of their heritage. - Captivating Theatrical Dramas: One of the most praised segments of the week
was the series of student-led plays. The dramas beautifully reenacted the
traditional Somali way of life. A standout performance illustrated the
historical, respectful, and honorable customs of Somali marriage
proposals—showcasing the dignified way a girl’s hand was historically
asked for from her family. - “Justice Under the Tree” Play: Another powerful drama brought to life the
traditional Somali justice system, known as Garta Geedka Hoosteeda. Students
masterfully acted out how community elders would gather under a tree to
resolve disputes, highlighting the profound customary laws (Xeer) that
maintained peace and fairness in society. - Arts & Crafts Exhibition: The university hosted a stunning visual arts
(Farshaxan) exhibition, where talented students displayed paintings, crafts,
and cultural artifacts, reflecting the creative spirit of the Amoud
community. - Poetry & Spoken Word: Honoring the fact that Somalis are known as the
“Nation of Poets,” a fierce but friendly poetry and spoken word competition
(Tartan Gabay iyo Maanso) took center stage. Students delivered moving
verses, celebrating the deep-rooted Somali oral tradition. - Athletics & Sports: Beyond arts and culture, the week featured thrilling
athletic competitions. Students showcased their speed and endurance in both
long-distance and short-distance running races (Tartan orod oo dheer iyo mid
gaaban), bringing a spirit of sportsmanship and physical excellence to the
festivities.
Speaking at the closing ceremony on May 7th, university officials praised the
students for their extraordinary talents and their dedication to preserving
Somali culture. The Amoud University Culture Week 2026 was not just an
entertainment event; it was a vital educational experience that bridged the gap
between the past and the present.
